News for the week of December 16, 2013

Hey, it’s fun to be reminded we live in Canada every once in a while, isn’t it?

At BlogTO, Erinn Beth Langille reviews new Corktown business The Healthy Road. You can read it here. The Healthy Road has lots of products that can help you stay healthy this winter. Be sure to pay ’em a visit at 518 King Street East.

In other business news, remember that Corktown fave Adornments on Queen has a crazy-good holiday sale on now, running right up through Christmas Eve. Great for your last minute gifts!

The Grid’s Martin Morrow has a review of Parfumeriecurrently on stage at the Young Centre for the Performing Arts in the Distillery District: “As wise as it is funny, Parfumerie will keep you laughing steadily until you tear up at the end.” Don’t miss it – it runs until December 28. You can buy tickets online.

Waterfront Toronto has released their December 2013 newsletter. You can read it here. Of note: there’s a great hill for tobogganing in Corktown Common. Grab your sleds and check it out.

Finally, our friends at 51 Division have some tips on keeping your home and property safe this holiday season. You can’t be too careful. We also received this safety bulletin from the CPLC:

As in 53 division and 55 division, 51 division has experienced a “rash” of condominium break & enters in which the suspect is breaking into the Emergency Lock Box in the entry area.

Within this box, are usually keys which allow access to the building, as well as hydro and mechanical rooms.  Toronto Fire assures me that a master key is NOT necessary.  Toronto Fire may have to break down the door to a unit but that door would have to be replaced anyway because of fire damage. One condo did have a master key in the lock box which was broken into and had to re-key every lock in the building!

Also, condo locker thefts are on the rise.  Occupants need to be vigilant, use sturdy locks and move valuables to their units.

Events for the week of December 16, 2013

The Christmas Market may have wrapped up at the Distillery District, but there’s still festive fun to be had. Through Thursday, December 19, check out “Winter in the Distillery”, an art exhibit at Arta Gallery featuring the work of several great artists. You can find the details and hours here.

On Wednesday, December 18, the world famous Corktown Ukelele Jam is throwing their holiday party at the equally-famous Dominion on Queen (500 Queen East). Come out for good music, good friends and good times, starting at 8 p.m. Check out the Uke Jam’s website for details.

Finally, our friends at Little Trinity Church have just the thing to fill you with holiday spirit. On Saturday, December 21, the church will host Jazz Pianist Mike Janzen as he plays pieces from his 2012 CD Carols. The concert takes place at 7 p.m., with tickets just ten bucks — kids get in free. Check out Little T’s website for details.

This will be the last weekly Corktown update of 2013. I’ll return in the new year with all the details on goings-on you’ve come to expect. Remember that the January CRBA meeting is set for January 7, 2014 at Dominion on Queen. Until then, on behalf of the CRBA, we hope everyone has a happy and safe holiday season.
