Joyce Wieland Unveiling on Bright Street in Corktown.

Joyce Wieland Lane Unveiling, December 2025

Joyce Wieland Lane is the newest addition to Corktown’s roster of streets dedicated to a local resident. The street name was nominated by John Goodwin and adopted by City Council on Wednesday, October 22, 2025.

Corktown community members joined in celebrating the official street sign unveiling on Monday, December 1st.

Ms. Wieland (1930-1998) was a seminal contemporary Canadian artist who worked in a variety of media, including painting, filmmaking and textiles; her works focused on issues of feminism and Canadian identity. Wieland lived in Corktown for a number of years and worked from a studio at 497 Queen Street East.

An ambitious large-scale retrospective of her work titled Heart On is currently on view at the Art Gallery of Ontario until January 4th, 2026.
