Jane’s Walk Weekend! Top walks for Corktowners

This weekend is Jane’s Walk, a worldwide event celebrating the life and ideas of Jane Jacobs. Jane’s Walks are free walking tours led by volunteers that cover all aspects of history, heritage, politics and urban life.

Three Centuries of Corktown, presented by Enoch Turner Schoolhouse – Sunday, May 5 at 10 a.m

This tour will explore the changing landscape of Corktown – home to government, industry, immigration and constant change since the late 18th century. Meet at Enoch Turner Schoolhouse, 106 Trinity Street. Link to full description.

This River I Step In Is Not The River I Stand In, guided by Adrian Lightstone – Saturday, May 4 at 10 a.m.

Come explore the changing dynamics of Riverside and Leslieville. This walk will take us along Queen Street East over the Queen Street Bridge into the heart of Toronto’s east side. Meet at Queen Street East & River Street. Link to full description.

Making Riverside: a behind the scenes of Queen East, guided by Morgan Peers, Rachel Conduit & Anjuli Solanki – Sunday, May 5 at 11 a.m.

A Poor People’s History of East Downtown Toronto, guided by Gaetan Heroux – Saturday, May 4 at 10 a.m.

The walk will explore the history of poor people in East Downtown Toronto going back to Toronto’s first poor house, the House of Industry. From the Gardiner Expressway to Jack Layton Way – Jack’s impact on East Toronto, guided by Peter Tabuns – Sunday, May 5 at 1 p.m.

A walking tour of South Riverdale from Lakeshore and Logan to Jack Layton way at Broadview and Gerrard. A chance to look at Jack Layton’s handiwork and to see some the significant landmarks Jack was attached to and part of. Meet at Logan Ave and Lakeshore Blvd. Link to full description.

Fish and Storms and Energy Fields, guided by Todd Smith – Saturday, May 4 at noon

I want to take you on a stroll along Cherry St in the Portlands, ending up on Cherry Beach.  We will recount the history of this urban geography from the marshes of Ashbridges Bay, to Fisherman’s Island, to the development of the Portlands, and the long sacred spiritual and energy centre for First Nations people.
