Forged in part out of a need to help the feral cats who have called Corktown’s Percy Street home, Toronto Street Cats is a volunteer organization that has brought people together to build shelters for neighbourhood felines. They volunteers gather at the Toronto Humane Society, located at 11 River Street. (You’ll recognize it from the snazzy Corktown mural on the wall.)
On March 23, the group will pass a big milestone.
From their press release:
Volunteer Group Builds 1000 Shelters for Feral Cats
A group of Toronto volunteers from Toronto Street Cats will reach one thousand in the number of shelters they have built for feral cats in our city over the past three years.
The group will reach the big number on Saturday, March 23rd with a break in their usual building activities at 1:00pm. Their work and this event will take place in the garage of the Toronto Humane Society,
11 River St. at Queen St. East.A group of 30 plus volunteers gathers every other Saturday during winter months to build shelters for the cats that live in colonies of from three to thirty animals. The shelters are then deployed by volunteer feral cat colony managers who feed and care for the ferals throughout the city.
“A volunteer group that can consistently and regularly bring out thirty or more volunteers for months on end is something we can be proud of. And to build 1000 shelters is a major contribution not only to the cats, but to our city” said Bill Howes, coordinator of the shelter-builders.
The end goal of the group is to spay and neuter as many of the feral cats as possible in an effort to reduce their numbers and to provide a better life for those that remain. This work is done through the Toronto Feral Cat TNR Coalition, which includes the Toronto Street Cats, Toronto Humane Society, Toronto Animal Services, the OSPCA, and a number of cat rescue organizations.
