Corktown News & Events for the Week of January 26, 2015
CRBA ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING: We’re counting down the days to the Corktown Residents & Business Association ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING on Tuesday, February 3. The meeting will be held at Little Trinity Church (the actual church, not the Annex building) at 417 King Street East. All residents and business reps are invited to intend and help elect a new board of directors for 2015. In addition, there will also be a presentation and discussion about the King-Sumach intersection. The meeting will take place between 7 and 9 p.m. Hope to see you there!
MEXICANA CORKTOWN: From Toronto Life comes confirmation of something we’d heard rumblings about over the last few weeks. Dave Sidhu, owner of the La Playa Mexican restaurants located in neighbourhoods across Toronto, will open a new restaurant called Cocina Economica in the space that previously held the Berkeley Cafe at 114 Berkeley Street. A welcome addition to the neighbourhood.
DEVELOPMENT MEETING: A developer has made an application for the southern parking lot lands in the Distillery District. The plan calls for a 57-storey mixed use building. If you want a chance to learn more and have your say, the city is hosting a public consultation on the application this Tuesday, January 27 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Enoch Turner Schoolhouse. Our friends at the Gooderham & Worts Neighbourhood Association have the details.
FREE ACCESSIBILITY WORKSHOP: Across the river, the Riverside BIA has been kind enough to invite Corktown businesses to attend a FREE ACCESSIBILITY WORKSHOP on Tuesday, January 27 where you can learn about the AODA and what you need to do to comply. The meeting will be held at the Ralph Thornton Centre from 6 to 8 p.m. You can RSVP your attendance at this link.
CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY MONTH: The Toronto Police Service is holding a kick-off event for Black History Month at Nelson Mandela Park Public School on Friday, January 30 at 1 p.m. The public is cordially invited to attend. You can learn more here.
ON STAGE THIS WEEK: Blood Relations continues this week at Alumnae Theatre. You can grab tickets online. At the Young Centre, check out ACCIDENTAL DEATH OF AN ANARCHIST, which debuts this Thursday and runs through February 21. Tickets are available.
DON’T FORGET ABOUT THE ELEPHANT: The White Elephant Restaurant & Bar on Queen East has more live music coming to you this week, with Sean Pinchin on January 30 and Toastr Party on January 31. Check their website for details.
