‘The Light in the North’ mural installation, December 2024

in

We installed a new mural on external building wall just west of Corktown’s Sackville Playground through the generous support of the City of Toronto’s Outdoor Mural & Street Art Program and collaboration of Corktown business Green Roofs for Health Cities, designed to promote a local theme and facilitate commercial or industrial neighbourhood identity. Entitled ‘The Light in the North,’ the mural was created by well-known Toronto artists Flips and Sowl, and represents Corktown’s identity as a welcoming place lighting the way home for people of all places. Most notably, Corktown’s many 1840s Irish settlers, and prominent early Black Torontonians including Lucie and Thornton Blackburn and Henry ‘Box’ Brown.
