Local news for the week of September 23, 2013

Urban Toronto has a post focusing on the plans for urban realm in the West Don Lands. Lots of trees are planned, with planting already underway on Cherry Street.

We want to extend a warm welcome to the Globe & Mail, who announced last week that they’ll be moving their headquarters to a new building at 351 King East (King & Berkeley) in a few short years. Their employees will undoubtedly enjoy being so close to Corktown and our general awesomeness.

Another coming addition to the neighbourhood is the Healthy Road, set to open and provide healthy products and advice soon at 518 King East. They’ve got a website and facebook page set up with some details — we can’t wait to pay them a visit.

Events for the week of September 23, 2013

The West Don Lands Committee holds their monthly public meeting tonight — Monday, September 23 —  at 39 Parliament in the 11th floor amenity space. Topics of discussion will include the public art strategy for the West Don Lands, the Toronto Expo bid and more. 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

A gentle reminder that The Underpants opened at Alumnae Theatre last week, and is on stage through October 5. If you’ve never seen a show at the Alumnae, you’re missing out. Find ticket details on their website.

Also on stage: Soulpepper’s widely-acclaimed production of Angels in America at the Young Centre wraps up this week. This is your last chance to get tickets. On Friday, September 27, Soulpepper debuts their next production, the Norman Conquests, a “comic feast where chairs and food are scarce, but laughs are served aplenty.” Get your tickets online.

On Thursday, September 26, the Gilead Bistro (4 Gilead Place) hosts one of their regular Local Food Movement dinners. A “communal dining experience,” guests will enjoy a menu inspired by Purdy Fisheries in Point Edward. New Corktown business Que Supper Club is holding DJ nights every Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Get your groove on.

On Saturday, September 28, our friends at the Gooderham & Worts Neighbourhood Association are holding a giant garage sale. Setting up on both sides of Trinity Street north of Mill Street, the sale promises some great bargains on anything and everything new and old. The sale starts at 9 a.m. and wraps up at 3 p.m. Don’t miss it.

Finally, the Toronto Film Noir Syndicate returns on Saturday, September 28 in the back room of the Dominion on Queen (500 Queen East). This month, the TFNS is showing the 1944 noir classic Phantom Lady. The screening takes place at 7:30 p.m. with tickets just $5. Find the details online.
